Winter Golf Course Set-Up
As part of our ongoing effort to improve the quality and consistency of our golf course playing conditions, the Golf & Green Committee approved the following action at the business meeting held on 8 November 2011:

Winter play course set up at ANCC will commence on or about 1 December and remain in effect until approximately 1 March each season. During this time only two sets of tee markers will be placed on each hole â one forward and one back. In many cases artificial mats will be placed on the teeing ground. When this option is utilized, all players should play from the mat and refrain from use of the grass teeing ground. We believe that this course of action will minimize winter damage, promote faster spring recovery and provide superior playing conditions during the golf season, generally March through October.

The Golf & Greens Committee thanks you for your support

Get Golf Ready!
Get Golf Ready is a national program designed to give the individual who has virtually no golf experience the opportunity to become familiar with the fundamentals of the game.

During this five lesson series we will help you to learn the little things you need to know when you come to play golf, in a relaxed and fun environment. You will learn where to check in, how to carry your golf bag, how to hold the club, chipping, putting and full swing fundamentals, some basic golf rules and the etiquette of the game.

As these sessions will be held in January and February we plan to spend most of our time indoors. Should the weather permit however, we will use the outdoor facilities.

Your payments include 5 sessions and there are six dates to chose from. Please let us know which sessions you plan to attend when you sign up.

Get Golf Ready at Arlington: 7, 14, 28 January; 4, 11, 18 February
Get Golf Ready at Fairfax: 8, 22, 29 January; 5, 12, 19 February
Cost per person: $125.00

No Group Permission Allowance (GPA) During Holidays
Group Permission Allowance (GPA) numbers will be suspended for the weekend of 24 & 25 December and 31 December & 1 January. We will resume with the normal GPA policy beginning Monday, 2 January 2012.

Change in Golf Pro Shop & Course Hours
Please note that beginning 1 November 2011 through 31 March 2012 the Golf Pro Shops will be open between the hours of 7:00 AM and dusk. The golf courses and driving range will be open between the hours of 7:40 AM and dusk.  The driving range does not open until 2:00 PM on Mondays or any Tuesday following a Monday holiday.

Year-Round Handicap Posting
In 2009, the VSGA adopted a new handicap revision schedule and active season dates. Virginia will no longer observe an inactive season allowing instead for year-round posting. Handicap index revisions will take place on the 1st and 15th of each month throughout the winter months. However, course conditions will dictate when scores can be posted and will be posted in the Golf Pro Shops.

Golf Shop Credit & Gift Certificate Redemption
Please remember that ALL Golf Pro Shop gift certificates and credits on Memberâs credit book must be redeemed by 31 December. Any certificate or credit not used by this date will be void and discarded.

Golf Course Reminders
â The water/ice machines and drinking fountains at both courses will be winterized and closed until approximately 15 March 2012.
â The restroom at White #3 and #7 at Arlington will remain open through the winter months.
â The Restrooms at Red #4 at Fairfax will be open whenever the golf courses are open.

Golf Organizations
Womenâs Golf Organization (18 Holes)
Opening Day: Wednesday, 28 March at Arlington

The Womenâs Golf Organization (18-Holes) has approximately 145 members. Women who are ANCC members or are the spouse of a member are welcome to join. You must have an established handicap of 36 or better and be at least 18 years old to qualify for membership. Membership is accepted anytime during the course of the year. Please contact Marcia Summers, the New Members Chair, via email at marciasummers@cox.net for details.

The WGO-18 sponsors 11 tournaments during the season as well as weekly events on Wednesdays alternating between Arlington and Fairfax. Members also have the opportunity to join and participate in tournaments sponsored by the Womenâs District of Columbia Golf Association (WDCGA), the Arlington Fairfax Association (ARFAX) and the Virginia State Golf Association (VSGA). Information on all scheduled activities is posted in the womenâs locker room at both courses. Please refer to your golf program for scheduled events.

Donât forget the Winter Golf program that we have, chaired by Barbara Drake. Contact Barbara for details by phone at (703) 978-6416 or email bdrake409@gmail.com. The Weather was somewhat cooperative for many in December. It can be fun in the cold.

Did you have a hole in one during the winter? Donât forget to let Barbara Drake know by phone at (703) 978-6416 or email bdrake409@gmail.com  so she can add your name to the Hole-in-One Club. Be proud!

Career Womenâs Golf Organization (CWGO)
CWGO will hold our first Winter Social on Thursday, 12 January from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in the Fairfax Grille.  You are encouraged to bring along any ANCC career woman who might be interested in joining CWGO for the 2012 golf season.

Additional CWGO Winter Socials are also planned for Wednesday, 1 February in Arlington, Tuesday, 28 February in Fairfax and Thursday, 22 March in Arlington. Ladies, please "Save these Dates" on your calendars.

Northern Virginia Retired Menâs Golf Association (NVRMGA)
Donât miss out on a great experience of playing up to 11 other courses. If you are 55 or older, you can become a member of the NVRMGA and do just that! ANCC will field two separate teams, one at Arlington and one at Fairfax.

The ANCC Arlington team was the league champion in 2010, and co-champions with the ANCC Fairfax team in 2011. Both teams are looking to repeat in 2012.

The 2012 Army Navy teams will be put together within the next few months, so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up. HOW? Just sign up, on the lists that have been posted on the bulletin boards in the Arlington and Fairfax Golf Shops, before 31 January 2012. Alternatively, you can sign up for the Arlington team on the ANCC website by clicking here. Even if you were a NVRMGA player last year, it is required you sign-up again this year.

How does NVRMGA work?
We play each of 11 opposing teams twice, once at home and once away. Play is on Thursdays, teeing off at 8:30 a.m. As a team member, you will be assigned to play in at least five matches and have the opportunity to volunteer as a substitute for matches on teams to which not assigned. A schedule will be produced in early February indicating which matches you have been assigned. These are full handicap tournaments, so no need to worry about your current handicap index.

If you would like more information, please contact
Mike Downs (703) 317-1822 pdx2@hotmail.com; Nick Fritz (703) 553-4435 nfritz@burdeshaw.com; or Jim Schroeder (703) 237-1939 jms.3821@verizon.net  for the Arlington team.
