Strawberry Jam at Southwest Virginia Museum

Amy Atwood, District Visitor Services Specialist, Virginia State Parks

Each first Saturday of the month, the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park hosts "First Saturday Community Coffeehouse".

This community event is an opportunity for family members to come together and relax. The next coffeehouse will feature Strawberry Jam on February 4, 2012 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Buddy Delp and Jane Branham formed the Strawberry Jam musical duo in 2010. They truly enjoy sharing their songs of good times and the good old days with their audiences. Being from Southwest Virginia, they have been influenced by the rich and diverse musical culture of the mountains. They love to utilize basic acoustic music to express themselves through song, using combinations of instruments and vocals. Guitar, mandolin, and Native American flute are their musical instruments of choice. They have been playing music and singing most of their lives and live musical performances are what they enjoy most.

The first Strawberry Jam CD entitled "Mountain Fall" was released in August of 2011. It was recorded at Maggard Studio in Big Stone Gap, Va. This musical work consists of 12 original songs written and arranged by Jane and Buddy over the years. Audiences are sure to enjoy the combination of the delicious vocals and musical rifts of Strawberry Jam.

Enjoy a variety of stories, songs, dances and surprises from family-friendly performers.

The First Saturday Community Coffee House, held on the first Saturday of every month, is an open-mic event and is open to all family-friendly performers. All interested musicians, storytellers, and poets should arrive by 6:30 P.M. for sign-up and scheduling. Admission is free to this program. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

For more information, please call the Southwest Virginia Museum Historical State Park at 276-523-1322.

Westmoreland to Host 2012 Canon Envirothon

Jim Wyman, District Business Manager, Virginia State Parks

Westmoreland State Park is hosting and providing instructional training and regional competition for the 2012 Canon Envirothon. The Envirothon is a good example of an ongoing partnership with conservation district associations and cooperating state, provincial, and federal natural resource agencies. The program boasts a successful history of providing hands-on environmental and natural resource management education to high school students and empowering young people with the competencies and motivation vital to achieving and maintaining a natural balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.

In 1979, the Pennsylvania Soil and Water Conservation Districts created an "Environmental Olympics" as a way to encourage high school students to become interested in natural resource conservation and environmental issues and careers. The program quickly gained popularity as a hands-on outdoor competition designed to challenge and test student's knowledge of soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and current environmental issues. In 1988, the program became known as the Envirothon, in 1997, Canon U.S.A., Inc. began supporting the Envirothon program and, in 1999, became the title sponsor. Each year the Envirothon touches and positively influences the lives of more than 500,000 young people across the country.

The mission of the Canon Envirothon is to develop knowledgeable skilled and dedicated citizens who have an understanding of natural resources and are willing and prepared to work towards achieving and maintaining a balance between the quality of life and the quality of the environment.

Westmoreland State Park is hosting regional training on Saturday, January 21st and February 11th culminating in a competitive event to be held Saturday, April 21st. While much of the training and many of the events will take place outdoors, at the park, Helen and Tayloe Murphy Hall will be the center for all indoor activities.

Westmoreland State Park is providing the use of their Natural Interpreter, Shanna Minarik, to work with the students, educating and preparing them for competitive wildlife events.

Shanna is from Billings, Montana and graduated from the University of Montana with a degree in Wildlife Biology. She has been with DCR for two years.

The Envirothon contains five components; Aquatics, Forestry, Soils/Land Use, Wildlife and one component that changes from year to year. Shanna is concentrating on Wildlife, increasing the local student's knowledge of Wild Birds, Mammals and Herps.

Canon Envirothon spans the length and breadth of North America, from the deserts of the southwestern United States to the frozen tundra near the Arctic Circle in Canada; from the Everglades to the Olympic peninsula. It is a large territory with many different habitats and remarkable biological and cultural diversity.

Westmoreland is very happy to have the opportunity to host and support the local Envirothon program this year. The team training at Westmoreland are members of 4H from four local counties who will be tested as well as make 20 minute oral presentations at the event in April. Their participation in this program should be commended as it is done on their own time outside of the normal school day.

Long Awaited Marina Comes to Occoneechee
Pat Eastwood, District Visitor Services Specialist, Virginia State Parks

Click To Enlarge Photo On December 15, Occoneechee State Park welcomed dignitaries, community partners, members of their Friends group and the public to a ribbon cutting ceremony signaling the opening of the park's long awaited marina. Occoneechee State Park, located on John H. Kerr Reservoir (also known as Buggs Island Lake), is a popular destination for anglers and other water enthusiasts,. This impoundment on the Virginia-North Carolina border is Virginia's largest lake, with approximately 48,000 acres under water.

Scott Shanklin, Park Manager, introduced Joe Elton, State Park Director and Master of Ceremonies for the event. Speakers included The Honorable Kevin S. Allgood, Mayor of Clarksville; Colonel Steven Baker, Army District Commander for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; The Honorable Thomas Wright, Jr., Virginia House of Delegates; The Honorable Frank Ruff, Virginia Senate; David Johnson, Director, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation; and Doug Domenech, Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources.

The Occoneechee State Park Marina has been the result of cooperation between several divisions of the Department of Conservation and Recreation, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Town of Clarksville, contractors and vendors who made the project a reality. The Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for management of the John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir (Buggs Island Lake). Each of the speakers acknowledged the cooperative effort needed to bring the marina project to completion. The marina is expected to increase tourism in the area, and provide a positive economic impact to the town of Clarksville and surrounding Mecklenburg County.

The new marina will enhance the offerings at Occoneechee State Park, and provide 52 boat slips, all with water and electric service. Of these, 46 slips will be available for annual rentals. Six slips will be reserved for transient use by cabin guests and campers, including one handicapped accessible slip. Click Here for a flyer.

The park will receive applications for initial annual slip rentals until February 15. At that time, applicants will be selected from a random drawing for each type of slip. Applications are available at the park or online by Clicking Here. Rentals will be for March 1 through the last day of February. Renters for one year will be guaranteed one renewal (two years total). The park will decide if additional public rentals will be available based on public demand; some renters may be required to vacate after two years to make slips available to the public. The park will maintain a waiting list of applicants in the order they are received after February 16, 2012.
