I understand y= our point about blacklists =E2=80=93 in the past we have found the notificat= ions of UBL/CBL listings valuable and acted on them. Mr. Sindelar,

I agree with you per the questionable langu= age that the backscatter folks use on their web site.

Please allow me to say a few things about these blacklists, why we incl= ude them, and possibly a reason that may or may not make them of common inte= rest to you.

Blacklists are what I prefer to call= reputation versus our fledged-out sinkhole data which we call intelligence.=  Whereas blacklists are typically taken on faith with little proof of w= hy any of the hosts were added to their shared list we feel that intelligenc= e data is much more informative and thusly productive as it derives itself f= rom vintage network security practices of information gathering.  I can= definitely see from your perspective where a list like backscatter comes ac= ross as more noise than anything else and I would agree with you 100% on thi= s point.  But, unfortunately a lot of folks out there 'believe' blackli= sts like backscatter and honor them accordingly from the perspective of pote= ntially blocking all mail from hosts on the list.  It is primarily for t= his reason alone that I decided to put a list like backscatter into the syst= em along with a few others.

=

We score the backscatter list at one point per listing (our lowest= score) and it is read each hour presently.  If my reasoning does not t= ranslate beyond this email, please let me know about removing the list from y= our view.
