From the previous zip file attachment, I received the word document, so thanks for sending that. You mention for "Server Two" that you have made some potentical changes here and would like additional quotes for this; however, I don't see those changes reflected in the Word doc (maybe I'm looking at this incorrectly or it didn't transfer over when I unzipped). Can you send those to me? Also, if going to SSDs, this would require quite a lot of SSDs since we would be looking at 64gb SSD drives, so how much usable space do you need here? =20 For "Server Three", you mention needing more disk space, how much usable space do you need? =20 =20 Chris Moran Enterprise Account Manager cmoran@softlayer.com =20 281.714.3126 (direct) 713.516.2982 (mobile) 281.714.4677 (fax) 866.398.7638 (toll-free) 315 Capitol, Suite 205 Houston, TX 77002 http://www.softlayer.com =20 =20 From: J. One thing that is not captured is that there will be many Sensor nodes instantiated around the internet. The Collector will reside at Softlayer to perform the aggregation of nmsg events arriving from the Sensors. The authoritative DNS servers will then have their A records periodically changed to direct compromised nodes to various sensors. Basic roles of each component: Authoritative DNS - Direct Malware C&C Connections to a Sensor node Sensor - Positively identify and classify a C&C connection and produce an nmsg event towards a collector Collector - Aggregate events from Sensor nodes into a manageable data feed for consumption by Praetorian Cheers, Matt --------------030404090601040208010003 Content-Type: Which OS would you like on the Collector?  I tend to use Centos, but please use whatever you feel is comfortable.

Hi Jerry,

3TB/month is plenty. In talking to Chris he indicated that increasing the bandwidth would be a simple process if we need more. 10Mbit/8 = 1.25 MB/s,
1.25 * 60 * 24 = 1.8GB/day
1.8*30 = 5.4TB/month.

If we sustain an average of 10Mb/s 24x7 to the collector we'll need some more bandwidth, but that's a good problem to have :) The DI sensor had spikes during the daytime up to 10Mb of raw traffic (not traffic between the sensor/collector). The average throughput would have been around 5-7Mb/s.

Cheers,
Matt

Hey guys,
Per the quote from SoftLayer the App Server to be used as the Collector is configured with a 3000gb/monthly bandwidth allocation.  Is this going to be enough or does there need to be more or even an unmetered 10mb line?

Alright, I just wanted to make sure. &n= bsp;Karim had mentioned to me in the past that 3TB may not be enough.

Your explanation settles it.  You are correct about a= ltering the configuration to accommodate more bandwidth in future.  Lik= e I said in my previous message we could always move to a 10mb line versus s= trict monthly bandwidth allowance if you feel that we approaching a given th= reshold.

Karim was telling me that you were seeing a= good amount of traffic... How much in comparison to DI?  I ask because= I want to make sure that my asset processor is geared to weather it.  = Presently and in the past the DI data set generated a csv with around 200k -= 300k lines of data per hour.  My processor can do about 2-3 million sa= fely including a full sync each hour.  Short a full sync it can do 10-1= 5 million I imagine... On current hardware.  That latter stat is somewh= at useless given a sync is needed at some point.

Th= at being said I have been slowly but surely working on. A completely new map= ping, processing, and syncing model.  Depending on what sort of numbers= you throw back at me I will know to speed up production of the new data mod= el.

Hi Jerry,

3TB/month is plenty. In talking to Chris he indicated that increasing the bandwidth would be a simple process if we need more. Keep in mind that the traffic to the central collector will be compressed from the sensor nodes with less protocol overhead. The net throughput to the collector will be much lower than the aggregate of the sensors combined throughput.

10Mbit/8 =3D 1.25 MB/s,
1.25 * 60 * 24 =3D 1.8GB/day
1.8*30 =3D 5.4TB/month.
