Smoking Ban Seminar

On March 30, the American Arab Chamber of Commerce hosted an informative meeting regarding the upcoming smoking ban. Over 200 business owners attended, with many questions pertaining to their various Hookah establishments.

The meeting included a panel of representatives from the Departments of Community Health, Agriculture and County Health Department from Lansing. The panel noted that the ban will be enforced in all Michigan bars and restaurants, with the exception of cigar bars and tobacco specialty stores.

Many of the hookah-restaurant establishments are finding themselves in an unpleasant position. With the new guidelines soon approaching, many of the business owners have to determine whether they will be defined solely as a restaurant or a cigar shop, which will force business owner to either eliminate food or tobacco from their business.

"It is important that we provide our business members with a clear understanding of the new law", says Executive Director, Fay Beydoun. There is less than a month before the law takes effect. Members need to better understand what is expected and how to prepare their businesses in order to comply with the new law.

Hamadeh Educational Services (HES) was founded in 1998 by Mrs. Nawal Hamadeh, an educator with over 25 years experience and a prominent member of her community. The HES vision is informed by Mrs. Hamadeh's experience in the Dearborn, Dearborn Heights and Detroit areas in southeast Michigan, and it is based on the unique characteristics of these diverse multicultural communities.

The HES mission focuses foremost on providing a quality education. Implicit in this mission is a goal to promote lifelong learning. HES also recognizes that education is fundamentally a local business. It's about good teachers in a well appointed classroom set in a safe environment full of motivated students.

HES's vision is to provide a choice for parents and students looking for a safe place to learn which is respectful of all cultural traditions, and that also provides students with the proper skills and experiences to assimilate and be successful in the United States as well as to be competitive internationally.

Today HES serves over 2300 students and manages three public school academies: Star International Academy, Universal Academy, and Universal Learning Academy.

HES Academies offer a full day instruction program for grades Pre-K to 12 that includes the study of Arabic and global languages. All classes are taught by certified and highly qualified teachers, who are committed to HES's mission of promoting academic excellence and cultural diversity. Two of HES Academies: Star International Academy and Universal Academy are authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) schools, offering the IB Middle Years program. The IB program is a comprehensive international curriculum that encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. The high school students benefit from Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement classes, a strong scholarship program with at least 49% of seniors receive scholarships towards college, and  a dynamic Athletic program. With high school graduation rates well above the national average and 100% acceptance into college at Star International and Universal Academy, HES continues to be a leader in education. Several Alumni's who have graduated from higher educational institutions are now serving HES academies as teachers, administrators, paraprofessionals and even board members. Many others have come back as parents; this is all a result of the strong believe in and commitment to the solid foundation and educational quality that HES provides to its stakeholders.

HES hub Academy, Star International Academy was recognized in 2007-08 and 2008-09 as one of America's Best High Schools by US News & World Report. Named one of America's 15 most promising charter school groups by the Charter School Growth Fund, a national organization based in Colorado, HES and its leadership continues to work towards empowering the community thru offering better educational opportunities for our children.

4th Annual Celebrating Success

American Arab Chamber Congratulates Deputy County Executive, Azzam Elder for his recognition as Crains 40 under 40

Azzam Elder

As deputy Wayne County executive, serving under Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, Elder has had to plow through daunting roadblocks. For example, opposition to a deal for regional collaboration on Detroit's Cobo Center, or implementing a new system to measure return on investment for county programs, or designing a mortgage foreclosure prevention program.

"I'm a firm believer that every challenge, every problem, has a solution, and the only question is, is there an appetite to make tough choices?" said Elder, a first-generation Palestinian-American who is the first Arab-American to serve as the county's deputy executive.

For Cobo, that meant months of painstakingly detailed work.

"It's was a matter of a couple of months of deciphering all the land mines that people would throw out there about Cobo," he said. The full article can be read by clicking here
American Arab Chamber Member, Ali Sayed recognized as
Crains 20 under 20

 Ali Sayed

The American Arab Chamber would like to congratulate
Ali Sayed, President of Hype Athletics, for being named  Crain's "Twenty in their 20's!"

In 2001, Sayed founded Hype Athletics Community to give kids in Dearborn some structured recreational activities, which include basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, tennis and baseball.

Hype got its nonprofit status in 2007 and has grown sharply since. Sayed said revenue was about $500,000 last year and should double this year, in part from a recent $1.8 million, three-year grant to fund programs for at-risk kids by the state of Michigan's Department of Human Services, administered through Wayne County.

Almost 9,000 kids in nine cities in Wayne and Oakland counties took part in at least one Hype program last year, including the athletic programs, tutoring, mentoring and substance-abuse education. Sayed has about 30 contractors, 10 full- or part-time employees and will need to add about 15 social workers, either as contractors or employees, to fulfill the new contract. The full article can be read by clicking here
