IWJ and Arise Chicago Join Hilda Solis for Launch of New DOL Campaign

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis was in Chicago last week to launch the Department of Labor's "We Can Help" wage theft awareness campaign, and IWJ was right there with her. The DOL involved IWJ and Arise Chicago as partners in shaping the program - an effort to connect with America's most vulnerable workers about their rights - before its public launch. "We can complement efforts," said Arise Chicago Worker Center Director Adam Kader. The DOL "brings the actual law, we bring the community pressure and the moral voice to combat wage theft."

A Jewish Perspective on Wage Theft

Rabbi Michael Feinberg of the Greater New York Labor-Religion Coalition makes a compelling case rooted in Jewish principles for the imperative of ending wage theft. "Jewish law and tradition strongly support IWJ's campaign to end wage theft," Rabbi Feinberg argues, "to decisively bring to an end the ethical scandal that the pervasive practice of wage theft constitutes." See also the Buddhist and Muslim perspectives on wage theft on IWJ's website.

Mining Disaster - Pray for the Dead, Fight for the Living

Mother Jones said, "Pray for the Dead, Fight like hell for the Living." The 25 miners who lost their lives in the Upper Big Branch mining disaster call us to both prayer and activism. Two ways we can fight for other miners and workers: (1) Urge your senator to support efforts to reform labor laws so workers can join labor unions without harassment; (2) Support budget requests for more mine inspectors by urging your representative to fully fund the Department of Labor's budget requests for additional enforcement staff.
