Another Attack on Women's Health

Two months into the legislative session and our state Senate is already playing politics with a woman's right to choose.

The Senate Judiciary Committee passed Senate Bill 160, prohibiting a rarely used, yet medically necessary abortion method that is already banned by federal law.

SB 160 is not only a redundant waste of time, it’s an extreme measure that does not include an exception to protect a woman's health.

At a committee hearing this week, the ACLU and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan told legislators to stop the political gamesmanship.

Instead, let's work together to promote policies that support a woman’s ability to make informed and responsible health care decisions.

Transgender Student May Get His Crown After All

Oak ReedMona Shores High School student Oak Reed will finally get a chance to run for prom court — an opportunity he's worked hard to ensure for everyone.

This past fall, Oak, a transgender teen, was elected homecoming king. However, school officials stripped him of his crown, claiming he was ineligible because he was enrolled at the school as a female.

After several letters from the ACLU advocating for the rights of transgender students and a student-led Facebook campaign, the school did the right thing. Prom court will now be gender-neutral and inclusive of all students regardless of their gender identity or _expression_

“All I wanted was a chance for all students to participate and be heard,” said Oak. “Now my classmates and I can just focus on having a great time at our school dance.”

A Lesson in Sportsmanship

37889.jpgThe Downriver League got our message loud and clear — female athletes deserve equal treatment.

Earlier this season the league attempted to save money by cutting the number of referees for girls basketball games, while leaving boys games untouched.

Not only did this violate federal civil rights laws, but it sent a troubling message to students that girls don't measure up.

Luckily, the league recognized its mistake after the ACLU reminded the schools that it's unfair and illegal to balance budgets at the expense of female athletes only.
