Dear Haytham,
It's all in the Senate's hands now — that's where we have to stop the all-out attack on Planned Parenthood and family planning launched by the anti-choice House of Representatives.
Events are moving quickly and shifting constantly. But, critical votes on reproductive rights could happen any day.
Senators Levin and Stabenow's support for women's health and family planning has been critical in the past and it's even more important now.
Title X, the National Family Planning Program, and the clinics it funds provide comprehensive family planning services — including counseling, contraceptives, education, and preventive health screenings — to women and men who are otherwise unable to afford these basic healthcare services. Not only is Title X the only federal program devoted solely to providing family planning services nationwide, but it is the only entry point for many low-income individuals into the health care system.
In 2009 alone, Title X providers performed 2.2 million Pap tests, 2.3 million breast exams, and over six million tests for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including nearly one million HIV tests.
Make sure Senators Levin and Stabenow know you oppose any cuts to Title X and Planned Parenthood.
With your support, the ACLU is on the front lines in all 50 states, launching a vigorous and passionate defense against this anti-choice blitzkrieg.
The attacks on Planned Parenthood and Title X are just the beginning of battles we're taking on all across the country. At the state level, anti-choice efforts include attempts to ban later abortions... to ban insurance coverage for abortion... to mandate ultrasounds be shown and described to women seeking abortions... to restrict teens' access to abortions... and more.
We need you to stay vigilant and willing to act on multiple fronts just as our opponents are doing.
That's why we need you to take action right away. Tell Senators Levin and Stabenow to lead the charge against this vicious assault on reproductive rights underway in Congress and all across the nation.
This is a critical moment for reproductive freedom and women's health. Please act now and stay engaged as this is going to move quickly in the coming days.
