Hmmm.

Try this: find a folder that is at least 1G. Say you documents folder. Drop and drag that to the external drive and see if it allows it to be copied over. If. Or my guess is something is wring with the drive. 

I'll be back in Brooklyn tonight and can call if you want to walk through it on the phone.

Seemed to erase and be ready to go (didn't even show up on the Finder window before) and the time machine begins the backup process.  The progress window pops up and shows MBs loading in, then it stops consistently at 986.6 MB of 177 GB needed to backup the entire machine.  Disk shows 499 GB available, but it will only seem to load 986.6.  Is is something about partitioning that I've done wrong.  Didn't see that option, but wondering if only that much of my external hard drive is available somehow.
