The Deputy Staff Judge Advocate to the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Col Vaughn Ary, put out the following initial information this morning: Marines, Our Corps lost a great Marine this weekend. CWO4 McGriff passed away on 6 March at the age of 52. We will miss him immeasurably. Always dedicated to the mission, CWO4 McGriff was at work with some of the Marines from JA Division on Saturday morning when he went into cardiac arrest. The Marines with Derwin immediately called 911 and he received great emergency care from the Pentagon team and the hospital emergency room. His treating physician told me that given the nature of the heart attack, he did not suffer. Derwin joined our Corps in 1983 and touched the lives of many of us in his over 27 years of service. He was a mentor to generations of judge advocates, legal administrative officers, and legal service support specialists. Those of us who had the privilege of working with him are all better off for it. We could always count on his sage counsel and unvarnished input. Having deployed with him to Desert Shield/Storm and OIF I, his name was always at the top of my "dream team" deployment roster and he brought the same leadership to our Corps as the USMC LAO here at HQMC. We are awaiting the wishes of the family on funeral arrangements and will pass on that information when it is available. In addition, we are in the process of planning a memorial service to remember Derwin and to celebrate his life and service to our Corps. More information on the memorial service will be posted on the SJA to CMC website.
