American Graduate series kicks off Jan. 27

Tune in to Metro Connection, 1 p.m., Friday, Jan. 27, as WAMU 88.5 News launches the American Graduate series, a nine-part look at the District's high school dropout crisis by education reporter Kavitha Cardoza and producer Ginger Moored. In Part One airing next week, Kavitha and Ginger talk to one family in which several members have not received a high school diploma. The series will air during Metro Connection with rebroadcasts on Tuesdays during Morning Edition, through March.

What do you know about the region's high school dropout crisis?

Before the American Graduate series airs, test your knowledge of the outcomes facing the region’s high school dropouts by taking this six-question survey. This survey and series of reports is part of American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen, a public media initiative made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

In Case You Missed It

Here's a look back at content you may have missed:

On Metro Connection, reporter David Schultz took a look at how a crackdown on prostitution in D.C. has affected sex workers and an organization working to keep them safe.

The Kojo Nnamdi Show discussed a project inspired by James Fortune, a slave whose bones were used as a teaching tool and later, hung in an exhibit in a Connecticut museum.

DCentric examined whether gentrification really explains D.C.’s historically-low murder count.

The Diane Rehm Show featured Frederick Forsyth’s The Day of the Jackal on its January Readers’ Review show.

What's Coming Up

During Morning Edition on Jan. 19 & 20, District reporter Patrick Madden continues his three-part series on the state of the city's job training programs. (Hear his first report here.)

On Jan. 26, former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinsk visits The Diane Rehm Show to share his thoughts on how America can revitalize its global status.

Community Minute

In this month's Community Minute, we highlight an out-of-school time tutoring program for students in the District, and a Montgomery County organization serving individuals impacted by mental illnesses.
