Re: Update

Neal,

Thank you for your kindness and understanding. Who knows how things will shake out, maybe Amy will come up to northern VA and find a great job that gives me more options to do what I would prefer to do. I don't think it will be an exciting job, I might be knocking on your door again, hat in hand. In the meantime, I look forward to Debra kicking my ass. No reason she should not get a piece of me, you and Haytham have already done it!

I'll stay in touch and look forward to hearing your stories over lunch soon.

Thank you again, you showed me real friendship when I needed it.

v/r,
Jason

Jason,
Congratulations on the excellent job offer!  You never need to justify to anyone, much less Haytham and me, that you are doing what's in the best interests of your family.  As we discussed on the phone, we are working towards a position where we could make better offers in the future.  But we can't match your DOL offer now.  Even if the job is not very exciting, it may be a good resume builder.  And unlike your commissioned service, there is no requirement to "stick it out" if it doesn't work for you.  Oh, and FYI, depending on what types of cases you're assigned, our partner Debra may be kicking your ass from time to time!  ;-)  Hope we can get together for lunch if you are living and working in Arlington.  The Metro system makes that pretty easy.
Best of luck,
Neal

  Neal,

Amy is still waiting for a quote from her benefits administrator on the cost of health insurance for the family. Separately, yesterday I got an offer from the Department of Labor for a GS-15 trial attorney job in Arlington. The job itself is not very exciting and I would much prefer to be doing criminal work with you. But I have to consider what's best for my family. It looks like they may give me a step 4 or 5, which would be around $137,000 to $140,000 or so, with health insurance and the opportunity to buy back my time. That plus matching TSP up to 5%.

I completely understand your firm's expansion and am willing to set aside the retirement benefits of the TSP and buying back my time, but the health insurance now plus a good salary is hard to turn down. Do you think you could come anywhere near that offer?

I am blessed with a good problem, the opportunity to work with friends doing what I love weighed against what is best for my family. Let me know what you think and if you could come close to what DOL is offering.

In any event, I hope you have a good weekend and I'll talk to you soon.

Jason
