My initial and continuing reaction to this is that he needs to go work for the DOL. It's a great offer and my view is that anyone who wants to work for Uncle Sam isn't a good fit for us on a philosophical level, anyway. I know for him it's just about making sure the family is provided for, but there are people who are happy being on the public dole and there are people like you and me who want to forge our own way (and Eric is one of us in that regard, as well). Neal,
Amy is still waiting for a quote from her benefits administrator on the cost of health insurance for the family. Separately, yesterday I got an offer from the Department of Labor for a GS-15 trial attorney job in Arlington. The job itself is not very exciting and I would much prefer to be doing criminal work with you. But I have to consider what's best for my family. It looks like they may give me a step 4 or 5, which would be around $137,000 to $140,000 or so, with health insurance and the opportunity to buy back my time. That plus matching TSP up to 5%.
I completely understand your firm's expansion and am willing to set aside the retirement benefits of the TSP and buying back my time, but the health insurance now plus a good salary is hard to turn down. Do you think you could come anywhere near that offer?
I am blessed with a good problem, the opportunity to work with friends doing what I love weighed against what is best for my family. Let me know what you think and if you could come close to what DOL is offering.
