Don't Let Asthma Control You

Asthma is a chronic disease of the air passages that strikes one in 15 Americans and costs nearly $18 billion annually. It can be caused by allergens or irritants such as smoke, dust or pollen, which cause the airways to become inflamed and narrow. Children of parents with asthma are at higher risk of having asthma.

Symptoms may include wheezing, coughing, pain or tightness in the chest and shortness of breath. Not all asthma attacks are the same. In severe attacks, the airways can close so much that not enough oxygen gets to vital organs. This condition is a medical emergency.

Asthma Facts
Every day in America:

  • 40,000 people miss school or work due to asthma. It's the number one reason for kids to miss school.
  • 30,000 people have an asthma attack.
  • 5,000 people visit the emergency room due to asthma.
  • 1,000 people are admitted to the hospital due to asthma with an average length of stay of three days.
  • 11 people die from asthma.

Management of Asthma
Talk to your doctor about the best approach for managing your asthma.

  • Quick relief - such as inhalers to relax the airway muscles
  • Long-term control - medications taken daily to control airway inflammation
  • Monitor lung function - Use a peak flow meter to monitor lung function, which decreases sometimes two to three days before symptoms of asthma attacks occur.
  • Environmental control- Avoid asthma triggers: Encasing bedding in dust-proof covers; avoid bedding made of down or foam rubber with synthetic materials; avoid pets with fur or feathers; consider replacing carpeting with hardwood floors; keep the humidity low and use the air conditioner.

The 16th Annual Dearborn Arab International Festival, June 17, 18 & 19,  offers a wide range of sponsorship opportunities for every budget, as well as marketing packages that are custom tailored to meet your goals.

The Festival, which attracts an estimated 300,000 visitors from the United States and Canada, allows you access to the largest diverse customers in the area. It converts about 12 blocks of Warren Avenue between Schaefer Road and Wyoming Street in Dearborn into a cultural celebration every year.

The festival has about $7 million of economic impact on the Dearborn area and improves the bottom line for multiple sectors of the local economy including hotels, restaurants, shopping and other activities beyond the Festival area.

It is a great cultural event, featuring food, crafts and entertainment from the Middle East. It also features a large carnival highlighted by a Ferris Wheel that overtakes East Dearborn and an interactive children tent that includes crafts, face-painting, clowns and puppeteers.
