Welcome to the NOVA SHRM Newsletter: A note from the President

Hello and Happy New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed your holiday break and are ready to jump in to 2012!

I would like to take a moment and say thank you to the 2011 NOVA SHRM board for all of their hard work in making NOVA SHRM the chapter of choice in the northern Virginia area. I also want to thank past president, Scott Donnelly, for his leadership during 2011. He has no issue with "rolling up his sleeves" and getting to work. Not only was he able to keep the board organized and on track, he was willing to jump in and help with whatever was needed. Scott's sense of humor, generosity, and willingness to serve had a great impact on our chapter and will continue to do so, as we move into 2012. Scott will stay on the board as a Director. He has also assumed the role of Secretary with the Virginia SHRM State Council.  I want to say a big "thank you" to those board members continuing to serve into 2012 and to our new board members who recently joined our leadership team. I look forward to working with all of you and realize that NOVA SHRM's success is attributed to you! I appreciate your hard work, effort, and enthusiasm!

As I reflect on the past years, I recognize that the world has been greatly affected by natural disasters, terrorism, a struggling economy, and the lack of affordable housing and health care, not to mention, a lack of jobs. In the meantime, organizations are increasingly under intense scrutiny and pressure to drive the business forward: innovate and develop new products, build a rich talent pipeline, provide challenging work experiences for employees while providing adequate salary and health benefits, adjust to changes in the global environment, and give back to the community.

If there is one sure thing we can count on for 2012, it's that the business landscape continues to change and HR must be able to adapt and anticipate future trends. NOVA SHRM wants to help you navigate the changing landscape. As the 2nd largest chapter in Virginia, we work hard to provide you with many opportunities to learn about HR trends and challenges that affect businesses and employees- today, tomorrow, and into the future. There are special interest groups (SIGS) to join, a Pinnacle Award winning mentoring program, monthly chapter meetings and full-day seminars (that offer HRCI credits), social networking events that allow you to connect with fellow HR colleagues, and much more.

If you are already a member, welcome to 2012! If you are new to the chapter, we look forward to welcoming you and know that you will enjoy all that is offered. In case you are in transition, we offer a "Transition Membership". NOVA SHRM provides active members and new members who are unemployed at the time of their membership renewal, or those applying to become a member for the first time, a one-time opportunity to obtain or extend their membership at no cost. Check out the "Membership" tab on the home page of the NOVA SHRM website. http://www.novashrm.org/article.html?aid=708

Start the new year out right and register for the upcoming dinner meeting on Tuesday, January 24 at 5:30 at our new location, the Gannett/USA Today campus in McLean. The event is titled, Corporate Social Responsibility & Business Sustainability: HR's Leadership Role. This event is approved for 1 SPHR HRCI credit and will be presented by Howard A. Wallack, the Director, Global Member Programs at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).  http://www.novashrm.org/article.html?aid=704

NLRB Taking Action On Elections and Postings, OFCCP Proposes Much Tougher Requirements On Government Contractors' Efforts To Hire The Disabled

NLRB Announces New Union Election Rules, But Postpones Implementation Of Its New Posting Requirement Rule Until April 30, 2012

The National Labor Relations Board ("NLRB") on December 21, 2011 announced that it adopted final rules that will significantly expedite the processing of election petitions filed by unions. The new rules will:

1. Provide an NLRB hearing officer with the ability to limit the evidence that can be introduced at a representation case hearing.

2. Provide the hearing officer with the authority to deny a party the right to file a post-hearing brief.

Higher Tax Break for Transit Benefits Expired at the End of 2011

Tax exclusion limit on transit benefits drops to $125 per month; parking benefits rise to $240.  As of Jan. 1, 2012, U.S. commuters are seeing their monthly income and FICA tax exclusion for transit passes shrink from $230 to $125 because Congress failed to extend the temporary higher tax exclusion limit, which expired at the end of 2011. However, also beginning Jan 1, 2012, the tax-free parking benefit has increased from $230 to $240 per month, according to the Internal Revenue Services' 2012 Employer's Tax Guide to Fringe Benefits. The IRS adjusts these benefits annually from the statutory limit to keep pace with inflation.

Compensation Planning 2012: Proceed with Caution

Companies should not give up on pay differentiation, even if budgets are small.  As organizations finalize their salary increase budgets for 2012, Sibson Consulting's research indicates that budget levels will increase slightly over 2011 results but remain well below pre-2008 recession levles.  THis indicates that organizations are continuing to proceed with caution as they enter the new year. [read more here]

Volunteer Opportunities for Goodwill's Upcoming Career Navigation Class

    Dear Volunteers,

We are seeking volunteers to help write resumes and cover letters and conduct Practice Interview sessions for the Career Navigation class. Resumes and Cover LettersWork one-on-one with students to develop resumes and cover letters that highlight and identify their strengths.  The students will start with a template, but they will need your expertise to identify the most important information for their current employment goal.

    Practice Interviews:
Conduct 10-15 minute interview/feedback sessions.  Each student will provide a resume and identify his or her employment goal.  Practice Interviewers will base their questions on the unique goals of each student, provide verbal feedback, and complete an evaluation form.

All sessions will take place at Goodwill's Arlington Career Campus.  The address is:  10 South Glebe Road, Arlington, VA 22204.  Our center is located above the store; just enter through the doors marked "Job Center" and take the elevator to the upper level (UL).

If you would to participate, please contact me at

If you are signing up to participate, be sure to list the date(s) you are interested in.

    Sincerely,
    David Amoroso
    Career Navigation Instructor,

    SAVE THE DATE

Please mark your calendars and plan on attending NOVA SHRM's first meeting of the New Year!

    Date: January 24, 2012

    Dinner Meeting: 5:30 - 7:30 pm

Title: CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & BUSINESS SUSTAINABILITY: HR'S LEADERSHIP ROLE  (#62608)

CSR and business sustainability have moved into the mainstream, and HR professionals have an opportunity to take a leadership role in this area.  Today, in contrast to 20 years ago, most corporate leaders view socially responsible business practices as a strategic issue that impacts their bottom line.  Learn about the evolution of CSR and business sustainability, the importance of the "Triple Bottom Line" concept, and the attributes HR professionals need to develop to become CSR leaders.  Also, explore the results of SHRM's 2007 pilot study on CSR practices in the U.S. and six other countries -- Australia, India, China, Canada, Mexico and Brazil.

Speaker: Howard Wallack, SHRM's Director of Global Member Programs

This program has been submitted for 1 strategic business management credit.
