I do appreciate the advice and admittedly had become too relaxed with the uniforms, and have already corrected that discrepancy. However, I was not aware of 'friction' with the Army. No one from that side of the building has addressed any serious friction points to me. Frankly, I am trying to lower my profile average bec it's too high. So while you're report appears just below - it will wind up well within. I've written several reports, and as a result - the beginning of this transformation. You've haven't been a Capt for very long (I was a Capt for six yrs before pinning on Major), and with current trend of "shrinking the force" I think you and your peers will face something similar to my time at same rank. In other words - you'll be a Capt for quite sometime, and - like you - I've had reports just under RS profile averages. Time is on your side, and my evaluation won't prevent you from advancing w/your peer group. As I indicated - you're among (includes you) a competitve bunch of co grade performers. Unfortunately for you like many other Capt's I report on as RS - you're all among a tight competitve group - so "my average" signifies a pretty darn good Capt. Granted, I was at the Bn level, nonetheless - to be in "our" position means working for two and then some. You represent that Reserve CMDR (the thankless part perhaps) plus all the site support and comrel that comes with the territory. Build on all those relationships so that you're organization represents much more than the few Marines and Sailors of the I&I staff. Take initiative while never losing sight of communicating w/the boss. Find the balance - too much versus too little. As I've indicated to the COS already - your company/site has been a success, and that's indicative of your leadership. Finally, as I've indicated in another piece of correspondence to all I&I's - ensure you don't lose sight of the critical role you and the 1stSgt play while on "independent duty." Your tone, actions, example, etc - make all the difference, and if Marines are forgetting who they are and what we're all about - they'll fall into the trap of exhibiting behavior and actions that are sometimes perceived as hidden from observation. It's amazing how dependent independent duty truly is given the dispersion of sites. But when Marines are doing what Marines are supposed to do - you'd be surprised how many favorable comments at Bn I&I receives.... In contrast - there are times when the opposite is true. We have seen among MP's in particular (not that other's are not affected) that there is potential to fall into that "above the law" mentality. This sense that having been exposed to so much within the lanes of moral, ethcial, and illegegal behavior - there begins this, almost blurring/fuzzy line - that now becomes somewhat of the acceptable norm. That was wrong once, is now ok. In other words - grey area got large. This is very dangerous, and as leaders - we must ensure this never occurs. I can't say for certain that the Marine Times is completely accurate with its tale - but the point is - this "trap" is not exclusive to the west coast, and that respective article focus. Again - I don't believe you are of that same mold that would allow any such impact to an organization, but it probably had an impact on your perspective of things. So, as requested - my advice is to do things you know is right and w/i standard. Exercise your co-level authority to make lexington a little better than when you arrived; make a positive difference in all around you - and enjoy the I&I experience - because you will learn so much from it. You're young in age and rank - and you have enormous potential for a successful Marine Corps career. You're among and shoulder to shoulder with some quality performers - and don't lose sight of that.
